Over time, it is entirely natural for breasts to lose their youthful elasticity and firmness. Factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight loss, and the simple passage of time can cause the skin to stretch and the breast tissue to drop—a condition clinically known as ptosis.

If your breasts have lost their shape or your nipples now point downward, a mastopexy (breast uplift) is a highly effective way to turn back the clock. Our approach to breast uplift surgery focuses on removing excess skin, elevating the existing breast tissue, and creating a beautifully contoured, firmer profile that sits naturally on your chest.
What Does a Breast Uplift Involve?
A mastopexy does not significantly change the size of your breasts; rather, it restores their position and shape. During the procedure, we focus on three vital steps to achieve a lasting, naturally lifted result:
- Skin Excision: We carefully remove the excess, overstretched skin that is no longer supporting the breast.
- Tissue Reshaping: The underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped into a tighter, firmer mound to restore a youthful contour.
- Nipple Repositioning: Because sagging breasts typically cause the nipple and areola to point downward or sit very low, we reposition them higher on the reshaped breast. If the areolas have stretched over time, we can also discreetly reduce their size during this step.
Note on volume: If you have lost significant breast volume (emptiness in the upper pole) in addition to drooping, a mastopexy alone will not restore that lost fullness. In these cases, we frequently combine the uplift with a breast implant (Augmentation-Mastopexy) or fat grafting to restore both elevated position and beautiful volume in a single procedure.
Are You a Good Candidate?
You may be an excellent candidate for a breast uplift if:
- Your breasts have lost their firmness and shape, presenting a flattened or elongated appearance.
- Your nipples sit below the breast crease and point downward.
- Your breasts are asymmetrical, with one noticeably lower than the other.
- You are happy with the general volume of your breasts, but unhappy with their drooping position.
- You have maintained a stable weight and have essentially completed your family, as future pregnancies will stretch the skin again.
The Surgical Journey and Recovery
We ensure your surgical process is closely monitored and fully supported from start to finish.
- The Surgery: A breast uplift is performed under general anaesthetic at one of our premium private hospitals in Sussex or Kent and typically takes 2 to 3 hours.
- Going Home: Depending on the extent of the surgery and if implants were used, this can be performed as a daycase or may require a single overnight stay for observation.
- The First Few Weeks: You will experience some swelling and mild bruising. You must wear a supportive, non-wired post-surgical bra continuously for the first 6 weeks to support the healing tissues. You will need to rest, sleep on your back, and avoid raising your arms high above your head or lifting heavy objects.
- Returning to Normalcy: Most patients comfortably return to light, desk-based work after 1 to 2 weeks. Gentle cardiovascular exercise can usually resume at 4 weeks, with a full return to unrestricted activity and chest exercises cleared around the 6 to 8-week mark.
Frequently Asked Questions
What scars will I have?
The scarring depends on the degree of lift required. For a mild uplift, we may use a “donut” (periareolar) incision exclusively around the areola. For moderate lifting, a “lollipop” (vertical) scar around the areola and straight down to the breast crease is common. For the most significant drooping, an “anchor” (inverted-T) scar is required, which adds a horizontal line in the natural breast crease. We meticulously place incisions to be as discreet as possible and provide comprehensive aftercare so scars fade beautifully over 12 to 18 months.
How long will the results last?
A breast uplift permanently removes excess skin and elevates the breast, turning back the clock significantly. However, it does not stop the natural aging process. Over many years, gravity, age, and any future weight fluctuations will naturally impact your body. Maintaining a healthy baseline weight is the best way to prolong your beautiful surgical results.
Will an uplift affect sensation in my nipples?
Some temporary numbness or hypersensitivity is completely normal following surgery. For the vast majority of patients, standard sensation gently returns as the delicate nerve pathways heal over the first few months.
